Trauma therapy with EMDR at psychologist Pauline Bos in Amsterdam

When an experience keeps affecting you

Trauma therapy in Amsterdam

Sometimes something is long over, while your feelings or body keep reacting. Images intrude, or certain situations trigger tension straight away. Something can be done about that, and it does not have to be a "big trauma" to seek help.

A harsh evaluation, a divorce, loss, a medical event or a moment of powerlessness can leave a lasting mark. I first look at what is going on, and then choose with you what fits.

When an experience keeps affecting you

You understand rationally that it is over, but that does not help. People often recognise one or more of these:

  • an image or memory that keeps intruding
  • situations you avoid because they trigger tension straight away
  • continuing to believe something negative about yourself after an event
  • shame or guilt around a specific moment

EMDR, when it fits

EMDR is one of the methods I use when a specific experience lies beneath your complaint. During treatment you briefly think of the most charged part of a memory, while at the same time doing a task that takes up your attention.

Not every complaint comes from an unprocessed memory, so EMDR is not an automatic first step with me. Whether it fits becomes clear during the intake. Sometimes ACT, cognitive behavioural therapy or another approach suits better.

When it comes from your work

I have worked for organisations including the Dutch police and Defence, where people carry a lot of responsibility and must function under pressure. People there often keep going for a long time. If your work stays with you, you can come to me too. An employer is sometimes willing to pay for a course; no content is shared without your permission.

Honest about what I do not do

With severe or complex trauma I look carefully at whether specialist mental health care is a better fit. I prefer to say so early on, and I will help you think about where to go.

A good fit for

  • A specific experience that still carries weight
  • Adults who function with sufficient stability
  • Mild to moderate complaints
  • Work-related experiences that stay with you

My practice is not the starting point for

  • Acute crisis or active suicidal thoughts
  • Severe dissociation
  • Complex PTSD
  • An unsafe or unstable home situation

Questions about trauma therapy

No. An experience that does not feel like a major trauma can also leave a lasting mark. When it still carries a lot of emotional weight, EMDR can help.
